Recipients of new tattoos are being warned after a man reportedly contracted a flesh-eating bacteria and died after swimming with one.

According to Metro, the case, which has been published in the journal BMJ Case Reports, involved a 31-year-old man who decided to swim in the Gulf of Mexico within days of getting a tattoo of a crucifix and praying hands on his right calf. He had reportedly been advised to refrain from the activity for at least two weeks.
The man is said to have eventually developed symptoms including discoloration in the area along with a fever and chills, and he was ultimately diagnosed with a harmful bacteria called vibrio vulnificus.
As the study states, “Despite aggressive initial treatment, the patient developed septic shock and died.”
Chronic liver disease due to alcohol abuse was also identified as a contributing factor.
According to AuthorityTattoo.com, people with new tattoos should not swim in pools, oceans, or fresh water bodies until the designated healing period is over.
