JAKARTA — The AirAsia Flight QZ8501 crash in the Java Sea on December 28, 2014 was caused by how the crew responded to a faulty component, Indonesian investigators said on Tuesday.
These preliminary conclusions, according to the first public report on the accident by Indonesia's National Transport Safety Committee after year-long investigation, come to light after investigators examined maintenance records of a key part of the aircraft's control systems, Reuters reported.
The Airbus A320-200's flight control computer had a cracked solder joint, which had malfunctioned previously. The maintenance records show that in the preceding 12 months, the solder joint had malfunctioned 23 times, the BBC reported.
When a stall warning sounded in the cockpit of AirAsia flight QZ8501, indicating that the plane had lost lift, one of the pilots tried to reset the computer by turning it off, according to black box data, officials told reporters. This is not usually done during a flight.
This action caused the autopilot to disengage. The plane then entered "a prolonged stall condition that was beyond the capability of the flight crew to recover," the report said according to the BBC.
The crew was then unable to take control the aircraft, eventually causing it to collide into the Java Sea.
According to Reuters, the intention of the report is not to attribute blame but rather to avoid future accidents.
An Airbus spokesman was quoted by Reuters as saying that Airbus received the report and that Airbus was "carefully studying its content."
