Men And Stigmas about Depression

Depression is one of the most common mental health issues men face and never discuss. Suicide is one of the most common causes of death in the United States, affecting men at a much higher rate. Why don’t men talk about depression? According to Fred Rabinowitz, PhD, men are taught to suppress expressions of sadness during childhood. He said, “Male depression sometimes manifests through the ‘male code’ that says you cannot show weakness, sadness, or vulnerability.” Many men instead become angry, cut themselves off from others, or develop addiction problems.
