King Porter – Joe King Oliver/Jelly Roll Morton 1924
King Porter Stomp is a tune by Jelly Roll Morton.
Morton himself first recorded the number in 1923 as a piano solo. He did not file a copyright on the tune until the following year. Also in 1924 Morton recorded a duet of the number with Joe "King" Oliver on cornet. Morton said that he had actually written the number almost 20 years earlier, and that it was named after his friend fellow pianist Porter King.
This is from a set of two tunes done with the Oliver Morton duo in Decemeber 1924 in Chicago. The other tune is Tom Cat Blues, previously posted on youtube and daily motion. It took both musicians until 1926 before they made recordings with their own bands again. Oliver with his “Dixie Syncopators” and Morton after a few recordings with lesser known groups with his “Red Hot Peppers”
Both tunes have been famous early jazz samples. Just a few days ago my Brazilian cornet playing friend Joao Missali played a beautiful rendition of the King Porter Stomp together with Jelly Roll styled pianist Alexandre LeHage.
