Washington Post journalist Jason Rezaian and family members are suing Iran for his 18-month imprisonment from 2014 to 2016 and his wife Yeganeh Salehi’s two months in captivity.

The document, which was filed on October 3rd, states that “Plaintiffs Jason Rezaian, Mary Rezaian, and Ali Rezaian...bring suit against Defendants the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps...under the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act...for severe personal injuries and other irreparable harm suffered as a result of Defendants’ unlawful acts of terrorism, torture, hostage taking, and other torts.”

The journalist and his wife had been arrested by Iran in July 2014 on allegations involving spying for the U.S.

However, the suit claims that “For nearly eighteen months, Iran held and terrorized Jason for the purpose of gaining negotiating leverage and ultimately exchanging him with the United States for something of value to Iran.”

He was eventually released at the start of the Iran nuclear deal.

In addition to the harm suffered by the pair, the lawsuit argues that, during the time of Rezaian’s captivity, his mother and brother experienced “extreme psychological trauma.”

As the Post report states, the family is “asking for an unspecified sum for damages.”
