Health officials in Florida have confirmed that a resident has been hospitalized with the often fatal brain-eating amoeba called Naegleria fowleri.

A Florida resident has been hospitalized with a brain-eating amoeba infection, reports ABC News.
State officials confirmed the case this week, with a spokesperson telling the Sun Sentinel that “at this time, we believe that the individual contracted the infection after swimming in unsanitary water on a single private property.”
No other information has been released about the patient or where the infection may have occurred.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the amoeba, named Naegleria fowleri, typically resides in warm freshwater and tends to infect people through the nose; most cases are fatal.
In fact, an 11-year-old South Carolina girl recently died after contracting the brain-eating amoeba, notes ABC News.
