Mars appears to have its own spectacular version of Earth’s Grand Canyon.
It is called Valles Marineris and, according to NASA, it is the “largest canyon in the Solar System.”
The expanse is estimated to be more than 1,800 miles long, up to 372 miles across, and nearly 5 miles deep; meanwhile, Arizona’s Grand Canyon is about 500 miles long, 18 miles across, and just over a mile deep.
The agency has also noted that “the origin of the Valles Marineris remains unknown, although a leading hypothesis holds that it started as a crack billions of years ago as the planet cooled.”
Scientists have recently identified several geologic processes occurring in the canyon.
