Fumigation of roach-infested apartment sets off explosion. Cockroaches fine

ASBURY PARK, NEW JERSEY — A cockroach-infested apartment exploded in New Jersey after fumes from bug spray built up and combusted, sending two adults and a toddler to the hospital.

Spokesman for the Asbury Park Fire Department Garrett Giberson Jr. told the Asbury Park Press the explosion occurred last Wednesday night after one of the occupants was spraying insecticide, got a headache and opened a window.

The oxygen from outside mixed with the fumes and a stove's pilot light caused the explosion. Giberson said, "They sprayed a tremendous amount of Raid. There was so much in the air that the introduction of oxygen just caused an explosion right away."

The explosion blew out the apartment's windows, bent the front door and damaged the kitchen.

Luckily, the three people weren't seriously injured.

Unfortunately, the apartment was still crawling with roaches even after the explosion.
