Blasts and deadly gunfire rip through Indonesia’s capital, killing at least six people

JAKARTA — Explosions and gunfire tore through Indonesia’s capital on Thursday morning in the first major attack on the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country since 2009. The attack follows threats made by the Islamic State in late November that “there will be a concert” in Indonesia — meaning that Indonesia is a target.

Seven explosions were reported in downtown Jakarta at a busy intersection that includes several malls and embassies.

According to the Jakarta Globe, the attack appeared to first target a police post in front of a mall at around 10:50 a.m. Witnesses say two attackers armed with handguns fired at the police post. Reports at the time suggested that at least one police officer and three civilians were reportedly killed in this attack.

Reuters reports that three suicide bombers are suspected to have gone into a Starbucks in the lobby of the nearby Skyline building and detonated their bombs. Police accounts of the event differ though, and the New York Times reports that local police say an unknown number of men armed with grenades and guns caused the explosion at Starbucks. At least one was reportedly on a motorcycle.

Starbucks later published a statement saying that one customer was injured, but all of the store’s employees are safe.

Following the attacks, up to six attackers were reportedly hiding out in the Skyline building. Police say that between 10 to 14 militants were involved in Thursday’s attacks.

Witnesses at the United Nations headquarters just down the street also reported that a bomb exploded in front of the office building.

The Jakarta Globe reports that police claim three attackers were shot dead and four have been incapacitated or arrested. The total number of casualties remains unclear, although Reuters currently reports that at least six people were killed during the attacks.
