FREMONT, CALIFORNIA — A homeless man in Fremont, California survived being crushed twice inside of a trash compactor in the back of a garbage truck on Monday morning, the Oakland Tribune reported.

The unidentified 44-year-old man was sleeping in a trash bin behind Dino's Family Restaurant when the Republic Services garbage truck dumped him and the contents of the dumpster into its trash compactor. The truck made two more stops, including at a Jack in the Box fast food restaurant, where trash from another dumpster was emptied on top of him and compacted.

The poor guy managed to escape through an opening in the roof of the truck when it stopped at a liquor store less than a half mile away from where he had been sleeping.
"He was very lucky to have survived the compaction and get out of the truck safely," Fremont police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques told the Oakland Tribune.

Police were notified by firefighters around 6:45 a.m., and the man was taken to the hospital for examination, where he was held for psychiatric treatment. According to police, the man had outstanding warrants and is suffering from mental health issues.
