Chile: Same-Sex Civil Unions to Become Legal

Same-sex couples are eagerly awaiting the legalization of their civil unions this Thursday in Chile, although the country still won’t allow full marriage. Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and some parts of Mexico have legalized same-sex marriage, a relation that is only supported by a quarter of the Chilean population, which remains highly conservative on gender rights issues. Chile only legalized divorce in 2004, and still outlaws abortion in all cases, something President Michelle Bachelet is trying to change. teleSUR
