Two more bombings hit areas around Cairo on Friday (January 24), after a large explosion struck Cairo's police headquarters in the morning.

The attacks began with a powerful car bomb that exploded outside police headquarters in Cairo's Abdeen district at around 6:15 a.m., killing four people and wounding more than 70, according to AFP.

About two hours after the major blast at police headquarters, a crude explosive device exploded under a police vehicle in the city's Dokki district, killing at least one person and wounding eight. The Jerusalem Post reported that a person driving past the police car threw a hand grenade in their direction, causing the blast.

A third, smaller blast targeted the Talbiya police station about 4 km from the famous Giza Pyramids on the outskirts of Cairo. The explosion was reportedly caused by a crude home-made device. There were no casualties.

The BBC reported that al-Qaeda-inspired militant group Ansar Beit al-Maqdis claimed responsibility for the attack on Cairo police headquarters.
