Sick face makeup: New, sickly fad spreads among Japanese girls

Japanese high school girls have apparently ditched their old quirky heavily-macquillaged styles, like the super-tanned ganguro fashion, in favor of a new one: sick face makeup.

Popularized in part by Japanese pop idol and Nogizaka46 member Shiraishi Mai, this new style follows on the heels of the once trendy "confused face makeup", and makes those who sport it look like aged dolls, as well as emaciated and ill.

Numerous Japanese websites and magazines now include guides to teach teens how to apply the make-up style. They claim the key to getting it right is perfectly horizontal, doll-like eyebrows and eerily-pale skin, in order to look simultaneously innocent and pitiful.
