A great white shark nicknamed Lydia has become the first great white observed to cross the Atlantic Ocean.
Lydia was tagged with a GPS-tracking device as part of an Ocearch scientific project, according to Ocearch.org.
She was first trapped in waters near Jacksonville, Florida. Then raised onto a platform, and examined before a GPS-tracking device was fitted on her dorsal fin while she was still awake. Lydia was then released to continue on her way, CNET reported.
The tracking technology updates every time the fin rises above the surface of the water, hence her whereabouts tend to be updated multiple times throughout any given day, CNET reported.
Lydia has already travelled around 32,200 km since she was tagged about a year ago and crossed the mid-Atlantic Ridge early this month. Researchers speculate her journey across the Atlantic may indicate that she is pregnant, according to ABC News 4.
