Four men, including two police officers, were arrested on Thursday on suspicion of having raped, killed and hanged two teenage girls from a tree in the Indian village of Katra in Uttar Pradesh.

A post-mortem report indicated that the girls came from the low-caste Dalit community, Al Jazeera reported.

According to the New York Daily News, the girls, 14 and 15, were sisters, while other reports said they were cousins.

On Tuesday evening, the girls went into the fields surrounding their house as there was no toilet. The Indian Express said that at least four men took them away to the nearby jungle, where they were allegedly gang-raped and then strangled, before being hanged from the branches of a mango tree.

The same night, the father of the girls, or of one of the girls, reported their disappearance to the chief of the local police station. According to villagers quoted by the New York Daily News however, he ignored the complaint.

The day after the killing, angry villagers sat under the girls bodies and prevented authorities from taking them down, asking them to arrest the people responsible for the crime.

The same day four people were arrested, and police are now searching for three more suspects.

Gang rapes and violence against women is widespread in India, where records show one rape is committed every 22 minutes. Activists however say the number of rapes is higher, as many cases go unreported, the New York Daily News reported.

Last year, after the brutal gang rape that caused the death of a 23-year-old woman on a bus in New Delhi, India tightened its rape laws, making gang rape punishable by the death penalty.
