A Maryland police officer has been suspended without pay and is facing animal cruelty charges after allegedly slitting a dog's throat officials announced Wednesday.

Nala, a 7-year-old Sharpei somehow slipped out of her owners yard on Saturday. A short time later, Sandy Fleischer saw the dog wandering around looking thirsty and confused. She approached the dog with intentions of rescuing her.

When Fleischer reached out to pet the dog, Nala nipped her. That's when police were called to the scene. Several officers arrived at the scene and attempted to subdue Nala using sticks and restraints.

Fleischer later told local media Nala was not behaving aggressively towards the officers, and it was the officers who used unnecessary force.

"I did see one officer that had been extremely aggressive that did have his knee into her chest that was tightening the noose. It seemed (they were doing it) relentlessly and unnecessarily," Fleischer told local station WBAL-TV.

What happened next is gruesome.

According to police reports, Officer Thomas Schmidt held Nala down while Officer Jeffery Bolger took a knife and slashed the dog's throat, killing her.

To make matters worse, the officers waited two days before reporting the incident to their supervisors or the dog's owner.

Schmidt has been placed on administrative leave. Bolger has been charged with felony animal cruelty, malfeasance in office and was suspended without pay.
