A man was shot dead police in Sao Paulo, Brazil, after attempting to seize a police officer’s pepper spray following the arrest of a local counterfeit seller.

A young vendor of black market DVDs, t-shirts and other items in central Sao Paulo, Brazil was approached by police conducting inspections on September 18, according to the uploader of a video which has surfaced on LiveLeak.

Police moved to arrest the man for his illegal stall, but he put up a fight and things spiraled out of control. Other local merchants come to the man’s defence. But one of them, a man dressed in blue jeans and check shirt identified in the LiveLeak video as Carlos Augusto Luis got too close.

Police soon found themselves in an increasingly hostile situation. One officer armed himself with pepper-spray to keep the encroaching men away.

That’s when Augusto Luis made a fatal mistake and attempted for the distracted officer’s spray canister. The cop, reacting to what he probably interpreted as someone going for his gun fires off a shot. Luis stumbled several meters to the road.

One of the many videos taken that day shows the deadly moment from another angle.
