Fracking accident: Colorado worker killed by bursting frozen pipe during polar vortex

A frozen pipe at a fracking site in Wells County, Colorado burst Thursday morning, killing one worker and injuring two others.

The fatal accident happened near the corner of Highway 66 and County Road 91/2, about 30 miles north of Denver.

Thomas Sedlmayr, 48, Grant Casey, 28 and an unidentified man were reportedly thawing the water pipe after it froze during the night.

According to Amy Tallent, a spokeswoman for the Mountain View Fire Protection District, the exploding pipe was at a pressure of between 2,500 and 3,500 PSI.

Sedlmayr and Casey were taken to nearby medical centers. They are reportedly expected to survive. Police in Wells County have not yet identified the man who was killed. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tallent said the fracking site, which is owned by Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, shut down for the remainder of the day, along with three other nearby fracking sites.
