How umbrellas are becoming the symbol of the Hong Kong protests

The semi-autonomous city of around 7 million people seems to have been pushed to the brink after the central government in Beijing decided it would only allow voters universal suffrage by pre-selecting all candidates for the 2017 election to choose a new chief executive.

Kacey Wong, an artist and assistant professor at Hong Kong’s Polytechnic University, posted an iconic design based on the game Resident Evil’s Umbrella Corporation logo two days ago in an effort to motivate other artists to create a symbol for the movement online.

Many designers and artists have come on board since Wong’s call went out over social media. Many are now also using the hashtag #UmbrellaMovement in both English and Chinese.

Wong and the others chose the parasol because it’s a benign domestic tool that’s used for protection against unwanted elements all the time, such as pouring rain or blazing sun.

But now the protesters occasionally need to use it to protect them from tear gas and smoke bombs as well.
