Rosetta mission: Philae probe makes historic landing on comet 67P after decade-long chase

After a seven-hour descent onto comet 67P, the Philae lander made history by touching down successfully onto the comet’s surface on Wednesday morning.

The Rosetta orbiter released Philae on Wednesday after chasing the comet through space for a decade.

Thrusters aboard Philae that should have helped to direct the probe to the comet were not fired, nor were the harpoons that were meant to anchor the probe to the surface. Consequently, the lander appeared to have bounced once from the comet’s surface before landing properly. European Space Agency scientists are still looking for ways to secure the probe onto the comet.

After Rosetta received a signal that the probe had landed, it transmitted the information back to Earth, which took 28 minutes to arrive.

The lander has begun sending back data it has collected from the comet, which is made of ice, dust and other materials dating back to the earliest days of the solar system more than 4.5 millions years ago.
