Ebola hits the UK as health worker returning from Sierra Leone is diagnosed with deadly virus

A healthcare worker who returned from Sierra Leone on Sunday has become the first person to be diagnosed with the Ebola virus on UK soil.

The healthcare worker arrived in Glasgow from Sierra Leone on Sunday night and was diagnosed with ebola the next morning after being admitted to Gartnavel Hospital after feeling unwell.

Local press reports said that the woman is an NHS nurse who had been working for the charity Save the Children at its Ebola Hospital in Kerry Town, near Freetown since November 23.

The woman travelled back to the UK via Casablanca and London Heathrow on Royal Maroc Airlines Flights AT596 and AT0800, before landing in Glasgow on British Airways flight BA 1478 at 11.30pm on Sunday night.

Officials said that she is only thought to have close contact with one person since returning, but that passengers on the flights she took, including 71 on the London to Glasgow leg, would be traced.

According to the UK’s ebola protocol, the patient will now be transferred to the high-level isolation unit at the Royal Free Hospital in London for further treatment.

Officials urged the general public not to panic and said that as the illness had been diagnosed in the early stages the risk to the general public was negligible.
