Police dog attacks handcuffed man Phillip White, who later dies in custody

On March 31st, police in Vineland, New Jersey showed up in response to reports of disorderly conduct. 32-year-old Phillip White was mauled by a police dog and beaten by police officers, as witnesses recorded the incident on their cell phones. White later died on the way to the hospital while he was in custody.
According to a police attorney and an eyewitness, after officers confronted White, he resisted arrest and tried to take one of the officer's guns. Video footage of the incident shows the police officers beating White and trying to restrain a police dog that was attacking him as he lay on the ground.
The video footage also shows an officer trying to confiscate the cell phone of one witness that had recorded the arrest. A law enforcement official says the police should have restrained the dog once they had White under control, and they had no right to attempt to confiscate the cell phone footage. According to White's family attorney, an independent investigation into the man's death is still underway.
This is the second police related death to take place in Cumberland County, New Jersey in the past 91 days. At the end of last year, police shot and killed 36-year-old Jarame Reid during a traffic stop that was recorded by the police car dash camera.
