A CT scan of a 1000-year-old Chinese Buddha statue revealed that inside of it are the remains of what researchers believe to be a monk.
There are countless Buddha statues in the world, but it’s unlikely many are as unique as the one that recently underwent a CT scan in the Netherlands.
Inside of the 1000-year-old Chinese figure are the remains of what researchers believe to be a monk.
Specifically, they’re thought to be those of Buddhist master Liuquan who was a member the Chinese Meditation School.
Endoscopic means were used to extract samples of both materials in the thoracic and abdominal areas and bone for DNA testing.
While gathering those, researchers came upon something quite unexpected.
In the mummified individual’s body were scraps of paper inscribed with Chinese characters.
Many specifics of the study have yet to be revealed, but, according to the NL Times, a full report will be published in an upcoming monograph on Master Liuquan.
