A recent and delicate surgery that was performed last week at Texas Children's Hospital resulted in the successful separation of a pair of conjoined twins.

The Houston Chronicle notes the operation started on Tuesday morning and lasted until the following day. In all, it took about 26 hours to complete.

The procedure was intricate to say the very least, as doctors had to separate the 10-month-old girls from the diaphragm, chest wall, pericardial sac, lungs, intestines, pelvis and colon according to KHOU.

According to the co-director of Texas Children's Fetal Center, Dr. Darrell Cass, this operation is the first known successful procedure when it comes to separating twins that have such a complex situation of sharing a number of organ systems.
