In today’s program Cristina Escobar interviews Zenaida Romeu, Cuba’s first woman orchestra director and founder of a now famous all-woman string orchestra, the Camerata Romeu. The orchestra is based in the old part of Havana in the Basilica of San Francisco de Asís, once a cathedral and now a cultural center. Camerata Romeu is not only popular with the Cuban people, but has attracted international attention with performances that often include dancing. Zenaida Romeu speaks of the difficulties of forming the orchestra during the economic crisis of the 1990s and the challenge of working with young people in Cuba today. teleSUR
