Former Major League Baseball outfielder and slugger, Jose Canseco is recovering after an accidental shooting. Reportedly, he shot himself in his finger while cleaning a semiautomatic firearm.

The incident occurred in Canseco’s Las Vegas home. Police responded to the scene at approximately 2:30 p.m on Tuesday.

Canseco was transported to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada. According to a police spokesperson, Canseco said he was cleaning his gun in the kitchen when it discharged.

His fiancée, Leila Knight, shared information about the incident.

She noted on Twitter, “Thank you all for the kind words and prayers. Jose is in still surgery and will be ok. Please pray for his finger !!”

Roughly four hours later, Knight Tweeted again, saying he was safe and that she was glad she was there when it happened.

Canseco’s career spanned 17 years in the major leagues. During those seasons, he was a six-time All-Star and had more than 460 home runs.

He played for the Oakland Athletics, Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees, and for professional teams in Toronto, Tampa Bay, Boston and Texas.
