Most children look forward to suiting up and bracing the cold for Halloween and free candy. Kids in the Canadian community of Arviat are going to have to stay indoors this year due to the likelihood of running into polar bears.

For a number of years, the bears have been flocking to the area, usually in Autumn during the feeze-up. 2014 is expected to be yet another year the polar bears will invade Arviat.

Due to the problem, a decision was made to forgo outdoor trick-or-treating and keep the festivities at the community hall.

Arviat's senior administrative officer Steve England remarked “Picture 1,200 kids going door to door in Arviat in the middle of polar bear season. It's a pretty obvious conclusion of what tragedies could come out of that.”

The hall isn’t very large so officials might work out a time schedule for different aged kids. Despite that little issue, the children won’t have to miss out on much.

The indoor festivities will offer face painting, haunted house tours and something no Halloween celebration should be without – candy. England says the majority of local residents support the trick-or-treating alterative.
