US says Iraq is priority in fight against ISIL

Heavy clashes and constant shelling of the Syrian Kurdish town of Kobani appear to show the US strategy of air strikes is doing little to deter Islamic extremists.

A propaganda video has been issued by ISIL militants purporting to be of their fighters inside Kobani where they claim to have taken control of almost half of the town.

Meanwhile US Secretary of State John Kerry has defended the coalition strategy against its critics:

“ Kobani does not define the strategy of the coalition with respect to ISIL. We have said from day one it is going to take a period of time to bring the coalition thoroughly to the table, to rebuild some of the morale and capacity of the Iraqi army and to begin the focus where we ought to be focussing first which is Iraq.”

Latest news on that score has been the announcement that Turkey has agreed to allow the US-led coalition to use its military bases for the fight against ISIL.
