A lightning strike killed at least 11 people in a small indigenous village in Colombia's Sierra Nevada mountains Monday .

Officials say the lightning struck one of the huts just as villagers were participating in a community ritual.

Over a dozen others were seriously injured and evacuated by a military helicopter to the city of Santa Marta.

The government's emergency management unit said it would send a team to investigate the site.
