Clerks was produced on a shoestring budget by a then-very-young Kevin Smith, a film school dropout on the verge of defining his own slacker-indie genre. Highly autobiographical, and a true labor of love, Clerks is the quintessential Kevin Smith movie. And while Chasing Amy, Dogma, and Mallrats had bigger budgets and more scope, Clerks was the movie that started it all.
