U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says countries inside and outside the Middle East have pledged military support against Islamic State militants.

Some nations, he says, have even offered to put troops on the ground, although he hasn't specified which nations have done so.

Kerry was speaking Sunday on the CBS news program "Face the Nation".

"We have countries in this region, countries outside of this region, in addition to the United States, all of whom are prepared to engage in military assistance, in actual strikes if that is what it requires".

Kerry has been touring the Middle East to build a military coalition against Islamic State.

The group has grabbed territory in Syria and Iraq to create an Islamic caliphate.

U.S. President Barack Obama wants airstrikes on both sides of the Syria-Iraq border to degrade and ultimately destroy the group.
