U.S. wins regional support for Syria/Iraq military campaign

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is in Turkey, drumming up more support for an international alliance that can root out Islamic State.

His visit comes on the heels of meetings with Arab leaders in the Saudi capital Jeddah.

That's where he's already signed up ten Arab allies to join what being described as a "coordinated military campaign" against the Sunni militant group.

Here too, for talks in Ankara, the crisis in Iraq and Syria tops his agenda.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE, JOHN KERRY, SAYING:

"We are obviously important partners in NATO, but not just in NATO, we have concerns with respect of what's happening from Libya to Mali to the horn of Africa and throughout the Middle East, and of course, now, the events in Iraq. So we have a great deal to talk about."

Turkey is a non-Arab Sunni power.

Close to 50 Turkish citizens, including diplomats and their families, are held hostage by Islamic State fighters.
