Ceasefire in eastern Ukraine frays, woman killed by shelling

Houses are reduced to ruin just north of the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk on Sunday...

...After renewed shelling appears to break a ceasefire -- between Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russian separatists -- that was barely two days old.

Both sides are blaming the other for the flare-up of violence.

Ukrainian military spokesman, Volodymyr Polevoy:

(SOUNDBITE) (Ukrainian) UKRAINIAN NATIONAL DEFENSE AND SECURITY COUNCIL SPOKESMAN, VOLODYMYR POLEVOY, SAYING:

"Ukrainian troops are in full compliance with the truce conditions and ceasefire. At the same time, over the past 24 hours, some of our checkpoints were shelled by the terrorists."

In nearby Mariupol, residents are waking up to the aftermath of overnight shelling.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) MARIUPOL MOTEL OWNER'S RELATIVE, ANATOLY, SAYING:

"We were hoping that everything was going to calm down somehow. But in my opinion, no one wants it on the other side."
