Joan Rivers was rushed to a New York hospital on Thursday (August 28) after she reportedly stopped breathing during surgery on her vocal chords. Mount Sinai Hospital released a statement confirming that the 81-year old comedian was there, but gave no update on her condition.

Ken Baker, an entertainment journalist at E! News, which features Rivers as host of its show "Fashion Police," said on his Twitter account that Rivers was in stable condition.

One of America's best-known comedians, Rivers is considered a pioneer for women in stand-up comedy.

Mount Sinai Hospital hospital said it would update Rivers condition as information became available.
