This is what's left of a mosque in Khan Younis after a night of air strikes by Israeli forces that killed five people and injured nine.

Israel says it targeted 20 locations across the strip ---- several homes including these in Gaza city were reduced to rubble.

First responders working to to put out the blaze say they're in a constant state of alert.

SOUNDBITE: Gaza fire fighter Rida Dayya saying:

"This is a civilian house; it was attacked earlier. The fire fighters are facing a hard situation as they continue working here, because we've been warned this place is about to be attacked again."

Palestinian health officials say just over 2,000 people, many of them civilians, have been killed in Gaza since July 8
