A grandmother in Town ‘n Country, Florida has been accused of shooting her 7-year-old grandchild by mistake. Linda Maddox and her twin grandsons were all asleep in one bedroom just prior to the incident.

The boys’ father had gone to work so Maddox placed a chair against the bedroom door handle for some added protection and peace of mind. In the early morning hours, 63-year-old Maddox heard the furniture piece scrape across the floor.

Her first thought was that an intruder had gotten into the home. She grabbed a loaded .22 caliber revolver she stores next to the bed and fired a single shot in the dark towards the door. Right after the firearm discharged, she heard screams from one little boy, named Tyler.

The child was soon rushed to St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital for treatment. His condition is currently listed as critical but stable.

Maddox typically watches the children two to three times per week while their dad works the night shift for the United States Postal Service. Deputies have reportedly been called over 10 times to the Maddox home in the past three years regarding suspicious people and such.

None of the police calls ever turned into a legitimate problem. Most of the neighbors agree the area is safe and wonder why Maddox seemed to think otherwise.

No charges have been filed against Maddox yet but the investigation is ongoing.
