Google Barge Headed For Scrape Yard

There was once a time when people had high hopes for the East Coast’s ‘Google Barge’. Well not only have those dreams been scrapped, but so too will parts of the vessel as it’s landed at a scrap yard.

Originally, the plan for the ‘Google Barge’ involved it being a floating showroom that would feature all sorts of high tech goodies. The barge makes good use out of 63 shipping containers that are arranged to create an industrial-looking 4 story structure.

The building was put together in New London, Connecticut and later towed to Portland, Maine in October of last year where the interior work was to be completed. At first, no one knew who owned the Portland barge along with another, similar one in San Francisco, but Google soon came forward and admitted they were behind what they called the ‘interactive spaces’.

However, for unknown reasons, Google apparently decided to abandon the Portland project. This past Wednesday, a tugboat towed the barge to Turner’s Island Cargo Terminal in South Portland.

There, the containers will be disassembled and scrapped.

The San Francisco barge which has been towed to Stockton remains untouched and nobody is quite sure what the future of that one will be.
