Mayflies Take Over Wisconsin

Mayflies spend most of their lives roaming around in water, looking for algae, and hiding from bats. Mating and hatching season is a whole different story, though.

They’ve recently taken their mating frenzy to the northern Mississippi River region. Now, millions of mayflies are descending upon Wisconsin in droves so thick they’ve been picked up by weather radar.

Gas pumps, ATMs, and vending machines are but a few of the everyday objects that have been rendered inaccessible because they’re beneath a layer of bugs.

Further, dead mayflies have been piling up in front of doorways and on sidewalks. In western Wisconsin one road became so thick with them they caused a 3-car accident.

Thankfully, the siege only lasts for a few days, but once the droves leave there’s still the problem of cleanup to contend with.

After last year’s occupation, several towns had to break out their snowplows to shovel the flies left behind off of the streets.
