Stella Hennequin - Mauriciens en Australie - Mauritians in Australia 2014

  • il y a 10 ans
This song is about growing up in Australia as a migrant from Mauritius and trying to balance traditions, adapting to the Australian way of life as well as fusing cultures. There is a heckler in the background, making fun of keeping the culture.

Humble gratitude to Marceau Camille for helping me make this song take shape, Guy Saminaden of Soundguy Productions for the musical arrangement and montage of the video clip and Linda Deojee for the backing vocals.

We acknowledge that some footage are the property of CHARM, the Immigration Museum Victoria and Aniele Deojee and Creole Kidz.

When composing this song, I was inspired by the works of Aniele Deojee for promoting her Mauritian heritage within the greater Australian community.

LYRICS ENGLISH MEANING

1ST VERSE (Creole)
I am a Mauritian who grew up in Australia
I speak English quite well
There is no doubt
However, when it comes to French & Creole
Perhaps not so well
I don't need to speak it
But when the need arises
I can manage

1ST CHORUS (Creole)
Share our culture I am constantly being told (x3)
All the Mauritians in Australia

2ND VERSE (Creole)
It is not an easy thing to do
Let me tell you
Especially when the critics come to town
Makes one lose patience, faith and lose face (x2)

2ND & 3RD CHORUS (Creole)
Share our culture with our children
Here in Australia, we have all mixed
We have integrated with other cultures
That's what it means to be a Mauritian in Australia

3RD VERSE (Creole)
I still eat my Mauritian food as well French food
I still dance sega, waltz and disco too
I have good manners as taught by my mother

4TH VERSE (French)
What does it mean to be a Mauritian in Australia
A little bit of everything and nothing at all
It is my attitude, my attitude
That makes me who I am
Not where I come from

4TH CHORUS (French)
Keeping our culture, what does it mean?
Sharing our culture, what does it mean?
Preserving our culture, what does it mean
To keep our culture in Australia

5TH VERSE (English)
Kept some old traditions
Created new ones too
You just can't tell who Mauritians are
'Cause we've blended in so well
We are Aussies now you see
Yeah mate, that's who we are
'Cause in Australia we are treated all the same

5TH CHORUS (English)
Keeping our culture
That's what we aim to do
Sharing our culture
We are one big family
Preserving our culture
Aussie Mauritian
Keeping our culture
Yeah we're proud of who we are
Sharing our culture
Yeah we're proud of who we are
Aussie Mauritian
We're proud of we are
