Sword fights erupt at Sikh temple

Sikhs fight each other inside their holiest shrine, the Golden Temple.

Wielding sticks and swords, several people were injured in the violence.

They'd gathered to mark the 30th anniversary of an Indian army raid on Sikh separatists who'd taken control of the temple.

But instead on Friday they ended up battling each other.

(SOUNDBITE) (Punjabi) CUSTODIAN OF AKAL TAKHT (SIKH'S SUPREME TEMPORAL SEAT), GIANI GURBACHAN SINGH, SAYING:

"An investigation will be conducted into the violent clashes and action will be taken against those who are accused. We will check the cameras and the cctv footage of the clashes."

These clashes were triggered by a minor argument during a commemoration ceremony for the victims of the 1984 raid.

India's former prime minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards in 1984 in revenge for the raid...and then nearly 3,000 people were killed in retaliatory riots against the Sikhs.
