What would you do if you stumbled across thousands of dollars? Three friends in New York state struggled with that question.

Reese Werkhoven, along with two of his friends, Callie Guasti and Lara Russo found an envelope chock full of cash stashed under the arm of a newly bought, but second hand couch.

The money in the envelope amounted to $700. Of course, the three friends were intrigued and began probing every inch of the couch to see if more cash was hiding somewhere else and sure enough there was; plenty of it.

About $40,000 in bills was recovered. The friends sifted through the various envelopes and on one of them, they found a woman’s named sprawled across the front.

The trio was conflicted and their discussions included what to do if the owner was a drug dealer or a bad person. They also consulted their families for advice. When Werkhoven’s mom found the mystery woman’s name listed in the phone book, her son called her up. The first thing she said when learning they had purchased the sofa from the Salvation Army was that she left her money in the couch.

At that point, there was no turning back. They knew the money had to go back and that’s what they did, bringing it to the woman’s house. She explained how her husband had taught her to put money away each week before he passed away and that couch was her hiding spot even after he died.

As a reward, she gave the three friends $1000 for returning her savings.
