STORY: Prince William celebrated the restoration of Second World War era submarine HMS Alliance on Monday (May 12).

The Duke of Cambridge flew by helicopter to Gosport in Hampshire for the event at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum.

HMS Alliance is the only surviving British submarine from the Second World War era.

The 31-year-old royal attended the rededication ceremony of the newly restored submarine, where he met veteran submariners and was given a tour of the vessel.

As he left the submarine he was offered a tot of rum - a ritual for newly qualified submariners.

William is Commodore-in-Chief Submarines and Royal Patron of the HMS Alliance Conservation Appeal.
