Changing an alternator belt 2CV and MEHARI

Changing an alternator belt.

Disconnect the battery.

Remove the 4 fan cover screws.

Remove the fan cover.

Remove the 14mm bolt which secures the fan backing.

Tap down hard on the socket handle to help you loosen the nut.

With a hammer hit the socket wrench from above and below to loosen the fan backing.

Shake and pull the fan backing loose.

Remove the alternator drive belt cover.

Remove the alternator belt.

Undo the alternator bolts without removing them.

The alternator is now free, and can be moved.

Pivot the alternator to the right.

You can now install the new alternator belt.

Once the alternator belt is fitted to the alternator, you can install the fan backing making sure the the belt is correctly fitted into the groove.

Put the 14mm bolt back into place.

To help tighten the bolt, insert a flat headed screwdriver at the head of the starter and block the fan backing from turning.

Slightly tighten the alternator support bolt.

Pull on the alternator to apply tension to the alternator belt, and tighten the tension bolt nut.

Now tighten the fixing bolt nut.

Check the tension of the alternator belt.

Attention, an alternator belt which is too tight could damage the alternator bearings. The belt should be stretchable of around 5 to 7mm.

Replace the alternator drive belt cover.

Make sure that it is correctly centered and does not touch the alternator belt.

Reinstall the fan grill.

Reconnect the battery.
Start up and check that there are no sounds of elements rubbing together.

All is installed. Drive safely.
