Beale Street Blues - Newblack Eagles 1987
This was a weekend when the New Black Eagle Jazz Band was celebrating their 15th anniversary. Our Climax Jazz Band was invited to Boston to help celebrate. On the evening before the Eagles played a concert and I had my new Sony video 8 camera and was able to film part of this concert. This video has been on the shelf for 20 years and I’m bringing you some clips from this outstanding New Orleans styled band.
The band had two special guests for this concert: clarinettist Butch Thompson and clarinettist and tenor player Brian Ogilvie.
In the band are leader Tony Pringle cornet, Stan Vincent trombone, Bob Pilsbury piano, Peter Bullis banjo, Eli Newberger tuba and Pam Pameijer drums.
To me this is the very best band of traditional New Orleans styled jazz in North America.
After the ensemble there is a very good solo by Eli on tuba, then after the trombone solo a great solo by Tony on cornet with just banjo and piano for a Hot Five effect.
In the final ensembles the band picks up energy in a controlled manner thanks to the sensitive drumming by Pam.
