Movies Based On Real Life: The Hills Have Eyes

So remember those car trips you used to take with your family as a kid? This may be a shining of why NOT to do them with your children. In 1977, Wes Craven brought "The Hills Have Eyes" to theaters. The movie (also remade in 2006) was about a family whose car breaks down in the isolated desert and attacked by a vicious clan of cave-living cannibals. Surprisingly, they are rumored to have been based on real people (and we use that term loosely).
"Hills" was inspired by the legend of Alexander "Swaney" Bean, the psychopathic head of a Scottish clan that reportedly killed 1,000 people to feed their inbred brood. Bean and company would set booby traps for travelers and then attack. Eventually the disappearances drew the attention of King James VI who put an end to Bean's reign and massacred his entire family. Although some say the whole thing never happened and was a smear campaign by the British, still some believe in the "Swaney" tale. Regardless, Hollywood's been making a killing off it ever since.
