Investigators search wreckage of Algerian military plane crash

This is the mountainside in eastern Algeria where a military transport plane crashed on Tuesday, killing 77 people on board.

The passengers were members of the armed forces and their relatives.

On Wednesday, investigators and emergency crews scoured the wreckage.

Their work made even more gloomy by the thick fog.

The Defense Ministry says the crash was likely due to bad weather.

It's the worst air disaster in the North African country in a decade.

Officials say 99 passengers and four crew were on board the C-130 Hercules transport plane, bound for Constantine.

One official told Reuters the plane crashed into the mountain and then exploded.

Several bodies were burnt to ashes and could not be identified.

President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has declared three days of mourning.

He's set up a commission to investigate the cause of the crash.
