'American Idol' singer Clay Aiken to run for Congress

He made a name for himself on 'American Idol.'

Now Clay Aiken is hoping to achieve the same success in the nation's capital.

He announced on Wednesday he will run for Congress as a Democrat in his home state of North Carolina.

SOUNDBITE: U.S. CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE CLAY AIKEN, SAYING:

"I'm not a politician. I don't ever want to be one. But I do want to help bring back at least to my corner of North Carolina that someone can go to Washington to represent all the people, whether they voted for you or not."

He released this campaign video filmed in the home where he and his mother slept for months on a mattress to escape his abusive father.

"In some ways this is where my life really began, on the floor of a living room in a small North Carolina home where my mother and I only had each other."
