Anti-government Islamist rebels in Syria recently issued a public apology for displaying a severed head in front a packed crowd. The group has asked for “understanding and forgiveness" because the head which they had triumphantly exhibited was from the wrong man.

When the decapitated head was shown in Aleppo, it was announced that it belonged to an Iraqi Shia solider, who had been fighting for President Bashar al-Assad. However it was soon recognized that the head belonged to a man named Mohammed Fares, who was considered an anti-government fighter.

A spokesperson for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIS for short which is aligned with al Qaeda stated “We call on God to accept Mohammed Fares into his Kingdom and to forgive his brothers that sought to rid us of the enemies of God and our enemies.”

Human rights organizations from around the world have voiced concerns over what they consider “barbaric” and cruel actions - one of the recent incidents included the execution of a teenage boy for blasphemy. The mistaken beheading is now adding fuel to the fire.
