CNN released new information on Thursday about the CIA's operations in Libya. Including information an alleged project to smuggle missiles into Syria, the actual number of people present during the attacks on U.S. diplomatic facilities in Benghazi and polygraph tests to administered to CIA operatives.

US congressional leaders are now pressing for a wide-ranging investigation into suspicions that the government has withheld details of its activities in Libya.

CNN revealed that CIA operatives in the country allegedly worked to supply Syrian rebels with missiles from Libya's armouries and that more Americans were present during the Benghazi consulate attack than the CIA had previously disclosed.

A source told CNN there were 35 people, and seven were wounded, some seriously.

To avoid the disclosure of any sensitive information either to the media or to Congress, CIA operatives in Libya have been subjected to polygraph tests, as frequently as every month, since January.

A CIA spokesperson said the organisation had been forthright about its activities in Benghazi, while a statement by the agency said its employees are always free to speak to Congress if they choose to do so.
