Usually part of pumpkin patches and fall festivals, the popularity and profitability of corn mazes are on the rise, especially as they are becoming increasingly artistic.

Autumn is no longer just about apple harvests and pumpkin patches. Many farmers now cut intricately designed mazes into fields of tall corn stalks, where you can walk like everything from an Egyptian to John Wayne.Additional theme examples include Zombies, the Superbowl, Jungles, and the Kraken sea monster.

Usually part of fall festivals, the popularity and profitability of corn mazes are on the rise, especially as they are becoming increasingly artistic.

Farmers can use their own software or hire one of several companies to design and build their mazes. Both use GPS technology, and involve heavy-duty work.

Various memorable themes, games, and adventures draw in customers and help small farmers make ends meet. Having completed thousands of mazes around the world, Brett Herbst noted farmers could make $5,000 to $50,000 of additional income per year.

However, one farmer noted it costs him around $100,000 in upfront investment. Proper planning and marketing can take months. Plus, Herbst says, “Obviously a farmer needs to make sure he wants to embrace people coming to his farm instead of chasing them off with a shotgun.”

Customers are advised to bring water, snacks, and a cell phone just in case they get lost.
